How I Prepare for a Shoot

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to explore a new character or tell a story from your past. Inspiration can come from a song, a book, a conversation. The important part is play. So staying open to the possibilities and flowing through each idea with grace: in other words there are no “bad ideas”. There are dangerous or hard to achieve or execute-ideas, but remaining non-judgmental is important.

Don’t worry about sounding or looking like anyone else but you. If you can hear your voice, see what you pictured, you’re on the right track.

Idea

What comes first, motivation or inspiration? Creating a space for yourself is key in this. A cluttered space creates stagnation and will have you feeling stuck. You don’t have to do a full swing spring cleaning but even just reorganizing your desk, email, or even starting with journaling out some thoughts.

Essentially you need a blank canvas. Brainstorming needs an open space to spread out and it can’t do that if you have ongoing projects or emotions needing processing and feeling out.

Pinterest, tumblr, and even our usual social media outlets can be utilized but it’s fun to experiment and branch out. Watch an old film, go to a concert, or a museum. Take note or photos of things that spark a little light in you.
